How to Find Micro-Influencers for Your Brand (Free Methods and When a Tool Is Worth It)

How to find micro-influencers on TikTok and Instagram for free: search tactics, a 10-minute fit check, and when a paid tool or an open brief is worth it.

Finding micro-influencers, usually defined as creators with 10K to 100K followers, costs little money but a lot of time: hours of scrolling, a spreadsheet of handles to vet and DMs that go unanswered. In Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 survey of 600+ respondents, creator discovery and vetting was the task brands outsource most (19.44%) and the top use of AI (36.67%). This guide covers free search tactics on TikTok and Instagram, a ten-minute fit check for every candidate, a calculator for what your search hours cost, the paid tools compared, and the faster route of posting one campaign on Aurelia.

Start by describing the creator you need in one sentence: platform, follower range, the problem they post about, your buyer, their format, location, and the deliverable and pay. Then pull search terms from customer language in reviews and support emails. On TikTok, search the problem rather than the word influencer, open profiles from relevant videos, read the view counts on the profile grid and follow the similar accounts the app suggests. TikTok One, TikTok's creator-marketing suite, adds creator search, analytics and open applications.

On Instagram, check your own Tagged tab, competitors' tagged posts, location tags for local creators and the Paid partnership label, which Instagram requires whenever a creator is compensated, including with gifted product. Competitor mining is the highest-signal free tactic: creators who tagged a competitor, used #ad or posted a clearly disclosed gifted review already make content for brands like yours. Ask about exclusivity, and check their disclosures against FTC guidance. Nano creators often surface in the comment sections of bigger creators and among your own followers and customers.

The ten-minute fit check covers niche share in the last 12 posts, median views of the last ten videos, engagement measured against the right denominator, comment quality, the creator's last sponsored or gifted post, a brand-safety scan, and a score out of 12 logged in a shortlist sheet with a where-found column. Engagement by views and by followers differ several-fold: Socialinsider's 2025 TikTok benchmark puts accounts with 10K to 50K followers at 3.90% by views. Run a full vetting pass, including fake-follower checks, before paying anyone.

Searching yourself means contacting more creators than you book. At illustrative defaults, booking 10 creators means finding and messaging 30, about 12.5 hours, or $625 at $50 an hour. Discovery databases cut search time but not outreach: as of October 2026, Modash Essentials costs $199 a month billed annually or $299 monthly, and Heepsy has a free plan and a Starter plan from $69 a month billed annually. At $50 an hour, a $299 tool pays for itself if it saves six hours a month.

Inbound flips the funnel: an open call on your own channels, or one campaign on Aurelia, brings creators who already want the work. On Aurelia, a brand posts a campaign with the pay, deliverables and application questions, and it goes live in the Aurelia creator marketplace. Creators of any size apply with their media kit and answers attached, Aurelia's picks rank them by fit with the brief with plain reasons and work samples, and the brand makes every call. Offers, contracts, shipping, content review and payment run in one place. It is free to start, with one platform fee added on top of the creator budget.
