Fiverr vs Upwork vs Backstage for UGC Creators (and Brands Hiring Them)
Fiverr vs Upwork vs Backstage UGC, October 2026: creator fees, subscription cost, payout timing and default usage rights, with the math on a $150 video.
Fiverr, Upwork and Backstage UGC all connect UGC creators with brands, but they work in three different ways. As of October 2026, Fiverr pays creators 80% of each order, Gig Extras and tips included. Upwork takes a Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you bid, and each proposal costs Connects at $0.15 each. Backstage says you need a paid subscription to apply for jobs, and its UGC payment terms put the Marketplace Fee on the buyer at a rate it does not publish.
How work reaches you differs as much as the fee. On Fiverr you publish a gig in the UGC Videos category and wait for orders; its help center says freelancers cannot contact new clients first. On Upwork, clients post jobs and you compete with proposals, and fixed-price milestones are funded before you start. On Backstage, brands post UGC briefs you apply to, or order a deliverable from the prices on your profile, and you have 72 hours to accept before the order is canceled and refunded.
On one illustrative $150 UGC video, Fiverr pays the creator $120, and you would list the gig at $187.50 to take home $150. Upwork pays $127.50 to $150 before the cost of the Connects you spent bidding. Backstage publishes no cut of your price, so your cost is the subscription spread across the jobs you win. Fiverr revenue becomes available 14 days after an order completes, or 7 days for Seller Plus, Top Rated and Pro freelancers, and Upwork releases fixed-price funds five days after the client approves a milestone.
Default usage rights are the cost most creators miss. On Fiverr, the buyer gets all intellectual property rights, copyright included, on delivery and full payment unless your gig description says otherwise. Under Upwork’s optional contract terms, the client owns the work product once you are paid in full unless you agree otherwise. Backstage’s standard UGC license is exclusive but time-limited: up to six months of paid ads and up to 12 months of organic use from the payment date, and the creator keeps the copyright. To license instead of sell, write the term, channels and paid-ad rules into the gig or contract first.
Backstage UGC is legit: Backstage was founded in New York in 1960, has been owned by Cast & Crew since January 2022, publishes a UGC license agreement and payment terms, and pays creators through Stripe. Its casting app holds a 4.73 average on the US App Store. Legit does not mean guaranteed work, and its payment terms say Backstage is not a party to payments between buyers and creators. A subscription on a company’s own pricing page is a business expense; a brand asking for a deposit to get a job matches the FTC’s job-scam warnings.
For paid brand campaigns, our pick is Aurelia, the creator campaign marketplace. Brands post campaigns and you apply in a few taps, with your media kit attached, at any follower count. Every campaign shows your take-home pay before you apply, with Aurelia’s 10% creator fee as of October 2026 already taken out, plus the product, the usage rights and the deadline. The contract is written from the campaign, the brand’s budget is paid in before a paid campaign goes live, and you are paid to your bank automatically when the brand approves your work. Brands pay one platform fee per campaign on top of the creator budget, with no subscription.
