How to Become an Influencer (and Get Paid) in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide
How to become an influencer in 2026: nine steps from zero to a paid brand deal, what each platform opens at each follower count, and what brands pay for.
To become an influencer in 2026, pick one niche and one platform, post useful short videos on a schedule you can keep for 90 days, and track median views and engagement instead of follower count. Then build a media kit, set a rate and apply to brand campaigns every week. Brands pay for audience fit, not audience size: in CreatorIQ's 2025 to 2026 survey, brand fit ranked first and follower count ranked last when companies chose who to work with, and Aurelia's campaigns set no follower minimum.
An influencer is someone whose content shapes what a specific audience buys, tries or believes, and whom brands pay to reach that audience. Marketers sort influencers into tiers: nano at 1,000 to 10,000 followers, micro at 10,000 to 100,000 followers, macro at 100,000 to 1 million followers and mega above that. Most of the market is small. HypeAuditor's 2025 data puts 76% of Instagram influencers and 87% of TikTok influencers in the nano tier, and MBO Partners found that 64% of Americans earning money as independent creators do it part-time.
Platform programs publish follower gates, as of October 2026. YouTube's Partner Program entry tier needs 500 subscribers, and ad revenue sharing needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, rising for new applicants from February 1, 2027. TikTok One projects and the US TikTok Shop affiliate program need 1,000 followers, and the Creator Rewards Program needs 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days. Brand deals have no universal minimum, which is why the first money usually comes from a brand.
The nine steps: pick a niche a brand could buy, choose one platform, set up a profile that says who you are for, build three repeatable formats, post on a schedule you can keep for 90 days, track median views, engagement, saves and audience location, build a media kit, set a rate with usage rights priced separately, and apply and pitch every week. Quote the median of your last ten posts, not the average or your best video, because the median is what a brand can expect from a typical post.
Getting paid starts with brand deals, which Goldman Sachs's 2023 survey data put at about 70% of creator revenue. Published rates are ranges, not a going rate: for accounts under 10,000 followers, Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 benchmarks give $50 to $200 per TikTok video, while Later's 2026 guide gives $100 to $500 per post and adds 30 to 50 percent when a brand runs your content as paid ads. Disclose every paid or gifted post, and never buy followers: an FTC rule has prohibited buying or selling fake indicators of social media influence since October 21, 2024.
Aurelia is the creator campaign marketplace built for any audience size. Brands post campaigns and creators apply in a few taps, with their media kit, stats and answers attached automatically. Aurelia sets no follower minimum, and brands see applicants ranked by fit with their brief, not by follower count. Every campaign shows the creator's take-home pay, the product, the usage rights and the deadline before they apply, with Aurelia's fee already taken out. The agreement is written from the campaign, and creators are paid to their bank after the brand approves their work.
