What Is UGC? The 2026 Meaning for Brands and Creators (with Examples)

What is UGC? The 2026 meaning of user-generated content: organic vs paid UGC, 10 types with examples, usage rights and a UGC marketing strategy that works.

UGC, short for user-generated content, is content made by people outside a brand, such as customers, fans and independent creators, rather than by the brand's own team. In 2026 marketing the term has two meanings. Organic UGC is what customers post on their own: reviews, unboxings, photos and tagged videos. Paid UGC is content brands hire UGC creators to film in the same first-person style for the brand's ads, product pages and social accounts. On Collabstr's marketplace, the average paid UGC collaboration was $154 in 2026, against an average asking price of $180.

The two kinds differ in cost, control and ownership. Organic UGC costs nothing to make, but the customer owns it and a brand needs written permission for each piece it reuses. Paid UGC is briefed and delivered on schedule, the creator usually keeps ownership, and the brand gets a written license that sets the channels, organic or paid-ads use, and the term. The IAB's 2019 definition covers only content made voluntarily by people with no material connection to a brand, which is why brands buy and use paid UGC differently.

The acronym has other meanings too. In India, UGC usually refers to the University Grants Commission, and UGC-NET is the National Eligibility Test the National Testing Agency runs for it each June and December to decide eligibility for Assistant Professor posts and the Junior Research Fellowship. Roblox players use UGC for avatar items made by independent creators and sold in the Roblox Marketplace. In tech and media policy, UGC is anything users upload to a service such as YouTube or Wikipedia.

UGC marketing means using customer and creator content across paid social ads, product pages, email, social feeds and landing pages. CreatorIQ found in June 2026 that creator content makes up 44% of brands' paid media creative, and half of respondents in Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 benchmark plan to expand work with UGC creators. A practical strategy runs in six steps: name the job each piece will do, make organic UGC easy to give, ask before reusing anything, fill gaps with paid UGC creators, put usage rights in writing, then test hooks and rebook the creators whose videos win.

Reusing UGC starts with a yes. A photo or video belongs to the person who made it, and a tag is an invitation to ask, so get a written reply before reposting a customer's post and a written license before running anything as an ad. For paid UGC, decide the channels, organic or paid-ads use and the term before anyone films. Running ads from a creator's handle needs their TikTok Spark Ads authorization or Instagram ad permissions. When a paid or gifted creator posts on their own account, ask them to switch on the paid-partnership label.

Aurelia makes paid UGC easy. A brand posts one campaign with the Get UGC for ads goal, or drops in the brief it already has, and it goes live to creators of any audience size, with nothing posted on their accounts. Creators see their take-home pay, with Aurelia's fee already taken out, before they apply. Aurelia ranks applicants by fit with the brief, writes the creator agreement from the campaign, holds the brand's budget until work is approved, pays creators automatically on approval and delivers every final file with its usage rights. It is free to start, with one platform fee on top of the creator budget.
