UGC Ads That Convert: Briefs, Hooks and Testing for Meta and TikTok in 2026
How to make UGC ads that convert on Meta and TikTok: a 30-second script template, 9 hook types, a testing cadence, volume math and creative fatigue fixes.
UGC ads are short videos made by creators in the style of everyday social posts and run as paid ads on Meta and TikTok. There are three ways to run one: as files from your own ad account under a written paid-usage license, as a TikTok Spark Ad using an authorization code the creator generates on their post, or as a Meta partnership ad once the creator enables ad permissions. Each route needs a written license, and the last two also need permission inside the platform.
Most UGC ads that sell follow five beats: a hook that stops the scroll, the problem in the viewer's own words, a demo of the product working, one piece of proof or an honest verdict, and a call to action. TikTok's creative guidance for performance ads asks for the core proposition within the first 3 seconds and the hook within the first 6, filmed vertically at 9:16 in at least 720p, in a style that is not overly polished. Ask creators to film the hook three ways and the body once.
Test hook types against each other rather than near-identical wordings: problem callouts, specific-viewer callouts, silent demos, skeptic openers, verdict-first lines, old-way-versus-new comparisons, first tries, POV routines and numbered lists. Keep the body of the video identical so the opening is the only thing that changes. When you brief for variations, list concepts, alternate hooks, a main cut and a short cut, a 9:16 master framed for a 4:5 crop, safe zones, royalty-free audio, raw footage and B-roll, and price each line in the brief.
TikTok recommends three to five clearly different creatives per ad group and three to five ad groups per campaign, adding new creatives to existing ad groups. A practical test order is concepts first, then hooks, then creators, then length and call to action, judged against a stop rule written before launch. Name every ad with one string covering date, product, concept, creator ID, hook type, length, ratio and call to action, so results can be grouped by any field.
To plan volume, multiply ad groups by live ads per group, then by the share you replace at each refresh and the number of refreshes a month. Divide by the variations each creator delivers. Four ad groups with four ads each, half replaced every two weeks, needs 16 new ads a month, or six creators filming one concept with three hooks. Watch for creative fatigue in rising cost per result, falling click-through as frequency climbs, weaker early views and slowing new reach, and refresh with the cheapest fix first.
One creator video can run on both TikTok and Meta if the brief follows the stricter rule on each line. As of October 2026, TikTok asks for 9:16 at 720p or better, while Meta recommends 9:16 for Reels ads and 4:5 for Facebook Feed video, with Reels text kept clear of the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% on each side. A creator-handle ad needs an authorization code for TikTok Spark Ads, or ad permissions and no licensed music for Meta partnership ads. TikTok has a label for AI footage, and OpenAI retired Sora in 2026, so real creators still carry the hook, demo and proof.
Before a UGC ad runs, get a written paid-usage license covering channels, duration, territory and edits, plus in-platform permission for creator-handle ads, and ship product early so the verdict is the creator’s own. On Aurelia, a brand posts one UGC campaign listing short videos, alternate hooks, raw footage and B-roll, with the pay per creator up front. Aurelia ranks applicants by fit with the brief, writes the agreement from the campaign with an optional 3, 6 or 12-month paid-ads term, and pays each creator once the brand approves the work. Usage rights are recorded with every final file at closeout.
