How to Pay Influencers and UGC Creators in 2026: Methods, Terms and Taxes
How to pay influencers and UGC creators in 2026: flat fee vs commission, deposit vs on-approval vs net-30 terms, PayPal vs bank, W-9s and a dispute checklist.
How to pay influencers comes down to four decisions made in writing before anyone films: the structure, meaning a flat fee, product, a commission or a mix; the trigger, meaning a deposit, approval or net terms; the method, such as bank transfer, PayPal or a platform; and the paperwork, meaning an agreement, a W-9 and an invoice. The fairest default for both sides is money committed before work starts and released when the brand approves the content, within a set review window and a set number of revision rounds.
Brands pay creators in six common structures: a flat fee per deliverable, gifted product only, product plus a smaller fee, commission on sales through a link or code, a flat fee plus a bonus on a measurable result, and a monthly retainer. A flat fee is easiest to budget because both sides know the number and payment follows a deliverable you can check. Commission costs nothing until a sale, but the creator starts without knowing what they’ll earn, so a small flat fee plus commission is a common middle ground. Add-ons such as paid usage, raw footage and rush delivery are best priced as separate lines with their own triggers.
Brands do not have to pay influencers in cash. Product-only gifting is common for seeding and launches, and product sent in exchange for content is a form of payment: it is generally income to the creator at fair market value, so put the retail value in the agreement. A gift asks for less than a fee does. Deadlines, revisions and ad rights are paid for, in cash or in terms the creator accepted before anything shipped. If you need a set deliverable by a set day, pair the product with a fee, and base any bonus on results both sides can measure.
Payment terms decide when the money moves and how long each side waits. Full payment upfront means the brand pays before seeing the work; net 30 or net 60 means the creator waits weeks after doing it. A deposit with the balance on approval splits the wait. Prepaying a platform that pays the creator after approval means the money is there before work starts and moves only for approved work. Paying on approval works for both sides when the money is committed first and the brand’s review has a deadline. No published benchmark for influencer payment terms exists, so treat any standard as negotiable.
Payment method decides which tax form applies. For payments made in 2026, a brand generally files Form 1099-NEC for a US creator paid $2,000 or more in the year by bank transfer, check or cash, up from $600 for 2025 payments. Card and PayPal business payments are reported by the processor on Form 1099-K, which payment apps file above $20,000 and 200 transactions. Collect a W-9 from US creators and a W-8BEN from foreign individuals before the first payment; without a valid tax ID, 24% backup withholding applies to reportable payments. This is general information, not tax advice.
A payment dispute usually starts with something nobody wrote down. Name the payment trigger in one sentence, commit the money before work starts, put a clock on your review, write down the kill fee, and pay on the date you promised. On Aurelia, a brand pays one campaign order through Stripe before the campaign goes live, the budget is held until work is approved, the creator agreement is generated from the campaign and signed in one step, and each creator is paid to their bank automatically when the brand approves their work, at the take-home pay shown before they applied, with Aurelia’s creator fee already taken out.
