Influencer Marketing for Small Business: A Budget-First Playbook
Influencer marketing for small businesses on a small budget: five real examples, the gifted-to-paid ladder with 2026 price ranges and a campaign template.
Influencer marketing for small businesses works as a ladder. Start by gifting product to 10 to 20 small creators whose audience matches your buyer. Pay the ones who deliver: as of October 2026, Influencer Marketing Hub’s planning ranges put one TikTok video at $50 to $200 from a nano creator (under 10K followers) and $200 to $800 from a micro creator. Then put a little ad money behind the best videos and keep the creators who sell for you. A first test costs about $500 to $1,500, and you can run it yourself.
Real small businesses show how it works. Olive oil startup Graza mailed more than 100 gifted packages to food creators before its launch and asked for nothing in return; Marketing Brew reported that it sold out after its January 11 launch. Book Box’s founders told Shopify that one micro-influencer’s unboxing video drew more than 100,000 views overnight, and they ran the same video as a paid Meta ad. Goodcall, which sells software to small businesses, had creators make short videos and ran the winners as Spark Ads; TikTok’s case study reports its cost per new sign-up fell from $185 to $7.
Two more examples cover the top of the ladder and the comeback. Modern Retail reported in April 2026 that Portland Leather Goods gifted product to around 500 TikTok Shop creators and paid cash prizes for results, crossing $1 million in sales there in 20 days. Bag Balm, made in Vermont since 1899, became a beauty staple after TikTok creators recommended it in 2022; Yankee Magazine reported that online sales tripled within a month of one creator’s post. An older business can start the same way, by finding the creators who already use its product.
The gifted-to-paid ladder has five rungs: gifted product, product plus a small fee for nano creators, paid posts with micro creators, paid-ads usage on your best videos (Later’s 2026 guide puts it at about 30 to 50% on top of the creator’s rate), and repeat creators on a monthly fee. Under $500 buys a gifted round of 10 to 15 products. Between $500 and $1,500 buys eight to ten nano creators on product plus $50 to $100 each. Between $1,500 and $3,000 lets you rehire your best three, add micro creators and buy ad rights on the two best videos.
To work with influencers as a small business, run one campaign in seven steps: pick one goal and one number, choose your rung, write a one-page campaign, line up 20 candidates, get a yes in writing before anything ships, ship with tracking and review one draft, then pay on approval and count orders on each creator’s code. Most teams do this without an agency: in Influencer Marketing Hub’s 2026 survey, 66.3% of respondents ran their influencer programs entirely in-house. Rehire your best three creators after every round.
On Aurelia, a small business posts one campaign and the agency work happens in software. Start from a template or drop in the brief you already have, and choose Gifted product, Paid, or Paid plus product. Creators apply to you, Aurelia’s picks rank them by fit with your brief, offers and agreements go out automatically, product ships only to creators who have signed, and each creator is paid to their bank automatically when you approve their work. The workspace is free, with no subscription, and each campaign carries one platform fee on top of your creator budget.
