How to Read a Creative Brief Before You Film (UGC and Influencer Examples)

What a creative brief for influencers means, an annotated UGC brief example, 10 questions to ask a brand before filming, red flags and revision scope.

A creative brief for influencers is the brand's written instructions for a piece of sponsored content. It covers what to make, hook ideas, talking points, do's and don'ts, specs, disclosure, usage rights and exclusivity, dates and pay. It does three jobs at once: creative direction, a scope of work, and a preview of the deal. Read the whole brief before you film, circle every number, ask about anything vague in one email, and keep the answers in writing, because the brief is what your drafts and revisions are judged against.

The guide walks through an annotated example from a fictional haircare brand: one TikTok posted on the creator's account plus two alternate hooks and B-roll delivered as files. The creative half (what to make, hooks, talking points, do's and don'ts) shows how to find the must-say line and spot claims you should not make. The terms half (specs, disclosure, usage rights and exclusivity, dates and review, pay) shows how to read each usage line as channel, organic or paid, duration and territory, and why itemized pay and a clear payment trigger matter.

A UGC-only brief asks for files rather than a post, so the weight moves from disclosure and posting dates to file specs and paid usage rights. Every file you hand over is a deliverable: each video, each alternate hook, B-roll, raw footage and sometimes an ad authorization such as a Spark Ads code. Anything not on the deliverables list is outside the job and can be quoted separately. A usage term of 'in perpetuity' means forever and is best priced as a buyout.

Before filming, send the brand the questions your brief leaves open, in one email: the must-say and claims, how much creative freedom you have, the exact deliverables, specs and audio, disclosure wording, where and how long the content will be used, any exclusivity, ship and draft dates, revision rounds and feedback time, and what triggers payment. The answers to usage, exclusivity and pay are the ones that move money, so update the offer or agreement before you film if they change the deal.

Red flags in a brief include no deliverables list, unlimited revisions, vague 'across our marketing' usage, a scripted verdict, health or results claims, instructions to skip disclosure, requests for your login, exclusivity with no category or end date, and deadlines that leave no time to use the product. When feedback arrives, find the brief line it points to: a missed must-say is yours to fix, a change within the brief uses an included round, and a new idea or extra cutdown is new scope you can quote as an add-on.

On Aurelia, brands post campaigns and creators of any audience size apply in a few taps, with their media kit, stats and answers attached. Every campaign shows your take-home pay, the product, the usage rights and the deadline before you apply, and the take-home you see already has Aurelia’s fee taken out. The agreement is written from the campaign, revisions stay inside the brief with your included rounds counted, and feedback is pinned to the exact second of your video. You own your content, brands get only the rights the campaign states, and you're paid to your bank after the brand approves your work.
