How to Get Influencers to Promote Your Product on a Small Budget

How to get influencers to promote your product on a small budget: six offers from free to paid, what each costs and how Ocean Spray, Stanley and Dunkin’ did it.

Small brands can get influencers to promote a product in six ways, ordered by how much cash they take: turning customers and fans into creators, gifting product for one agreed post, affiliate or commission offers, gifted product plus a small fee, a paid micro-influencer campaign, and UGC videos for your own ads. Each step up costs more cash and buys more certainty: a format you chose, a date you can plan around and rights you can use. Many brands mix rungs and move their best creators up over time.

Free influencer marketing is never free in total cost. In a worked example, a $40 candle with a $23 landed cost sent to 20 creators with no strings attached yields 4 to 8 posts at the 20 to 40 percent post rate one seeding vendor, Statusphere, says brands typically see. That is $57.50 to $115 per post, about what Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 planning ranges say a nano creator charges for a paid TikTok video ($50 to $200), but without a brief, a deadline or a format you set.

Well-known brands got creators talking by backing people who already liked the product. In September 2020 Ocean Spray gave Nathan Apodaca a truck full of juice after his skateboarding TikTok passed 27 million views, CBS News reported. Stanley, a 110-year-old brand, had the shopping account The Buy Guide place a wholesale order for its Quencher tumbler, and Retail Dive reported the first 5,000 cups sold in about four days. Dunkin’ put Charli D’Amelio’s usual order on the menu as “The Charli” and sold hundreds of thousands in its first five days, Tubefilter reported, citing a Dunkin’ vice president.

The cheapest creators are existing customers who already post about you, leave photo reviews or write to you. Offer a first look at new products, store credit or a feature, keep the ask to one honest post with a date, and ask before reposting. Give the perk for posting, whatever the verdict, because an honest take is what other shoppers believe. For creators who are not customers, gifting works best when the product’s retail value matches what the deliverable is worth and the post is agreed before you ship.

Affiliate and commission offers tie your cost to sales, but the creator makes the content first and earns only if their audience buys, so they work best alongside free product or a small fee. Set the rate from your margin: subtract product cost, shipping and payment fees from the price, then decide what share you would pay to win a customer. Promo codes were the most-used measurement method in Influencer Marketing Hub’s 2026 survey, and Shopify Collabs offers a free affiliate tool for Shopify stores.

Paid offers buy obligations. A small fee on top of product secures a deliverable and a date. Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 ranges put a micro creator's TikTok video at $200 to $800, while Later's 2026 guide puts a micro post at $500 to $2,500, and paid-ads usage typically adds 30 to 50 percent. UGC for ads averaged $154 per paid collaboration on Collabstr's marketplace but needs ad spend to reach anyone. Creators say yes to offers that fit their feed, state the value as a number, ask for one deliverable and leave room for their voice.

A simple 90-day plan: give each creator a unique code and tracked link, ask 10 to 20 customers, gift to 15 to 20 nano creators with agreed deliverables, score everyone, then offer the top performers paid deals with ad usage priced separately. On Aurelia, a brand posts one gifted, paid or paid-plus-product campaign and creators apply with their media kit attached. Aurelia’s picks rank applicants by fit with the brief, agreements are generated from the campaign and signed before anything ships, and creators are paid once the brand approves their work. To move the best creators up, duplicate the campaign as paid and invite them with one link.
