How to Measure Influencer Marketing ROI Without Enterprise Tools
Measure influencer marketing ROI without enterprise tools: KPIs by goal, discount codes and UTM links, the ROI formula with a worked example and a calculator.
Influencer marketing ROI is (attributed gross profit minus total campaign cost) divided by total campaign cost. Use gross profit rather than revenue, because a $48 order at a 65% margin only returns $31.20 toward the campaign. Count every cost: creator fees, product and shipping for every box sent, usage rights, platform or agency fees, and your own time. Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your gross margin, so at a 65% margin you need about 1.54 just to cover costs.
Pick one primary KPI per campaign before launch. Awareness campaigns are judged on cost per 1,000 views, traffic campaigns on cost per visit from UTM links, sales campaigns on cost per order and ROI, and UGC campaigns on cost per approved asset. Engagement is easy to collect but hard to turn into money, so keep it as a supporting metric and only compare engagement rates calculated the same way, by followers or by views.
You can track creator sales without enterprise software by stacking three methods that overlap: a unique discount code per creator, a UTM link per creator with lowercase values (Google Analytics treats parameter values as case sensitive), and one required post-purchase survey question. Deduplicate orders that used both a code and a link, report revenue after the discount, and compare orders, branded search and direct traffic with the 28 days before the first post to see the halo.
Report ROI as a range rather than one number: a tracked-only floor from codes and links, a likely figure that adds survey answers, and a third figure that adds content credit for videos you are licensed to run as ads. In the guide's illustrative example, a $3,600 campaign shows -32% ROI on tracked orders, -22% with survey answers and +11% once three licensed videos are valued at what the brand would otherwise pay to produce them.
Value reusable content like a production budget: cost per approved asset is total content cost divided by approved files, and content credit counts only files you have rights to use, only for the term in your agreement. Earned media value is a modeled estimate with no standard formula, so never add it to revenue or call it ROI. Measure at day 7, decide at day 30, and keep ad results from licensed files in your ad-account reporting.
Earned media value (EMV) is a modeled dollar estimate of what a campaign's views and engagement would have cost as paid advertising, and it has no standard formula. Three versions are common: views divided by 1,000 times a paid CPM; that figure plus a dollar value for each like, comment and share; or weighted engagements times your paid cost per engagement. On the guide's illustrative $3,600 campaign with 240,000 views, 12,000 likes, 600 comments and 900 shares, the three methods return $2,400, $5,550 and $7,950, while ROI on tracked and survey orders is -22%. EMV also ignores sentiment, so report it only as a labeled estimate with one consistent method.
On Aurelia, the cost and content side of the ROI report comes from one record. You pay one campaign order through Stripe, with a platform fee on top of your creator budget that starts at 10%, has a $99 minimum per campaign and is shown before you pay. Aurelia pays each creator once you approve their work; creators pay their own Aurelia fee out of the take-home pay they see before applying, so it adds nothing to your cost line. Aurelia records usage rights automatically from the campaign and contract, and closes out with unspent creator budget shown to the cent and one ZIP of every final file with its usage rights. Sales attribution stays in your own store and analytics, with the codes, UTM links and survey above.
