Product Seeding Strategy: How Many Products to Send Influencers (With the Math)
Product seeding strategy with the math: how many products to send influencers, cost per post, a calculator, and how Tower 28 and Stanley seeded product.
A product seeding strategy starts from the number of posts you need, not the number of boxes you can afford. Units to send equals target posts divided by your expected post rate. Statusphere, a seeding vendor, says in its product seeding guide that brands typically see 20% to 40% of no-strings seeded creators post, so 15 posts means sending roughly 38 to 75 units. Treat that range as a starting assumption and replace it with your own measured rate after the first batch.
Product seeding vs influencer gifting comes down to one question: did the creator agree to post? Product seeding, also called influencer seeding, sends product to many creators with no obligation, and a PR package is a seeding box dressed for the camera. Influencer gifting is the umbrella term for any free product given to a creator; a gifted collaboration is product in exchange for a deliverable the creator accepted before you shipped. The answer sets the post rate you budget and what you can ask for. The guide includes a PR package email template for no-strings sends.
How real brands seed product: Beauty Independent reported in January 2020 that Tower 28 sent 200 packages in its first influencer mailing, to mostly micro-influencers that founder Amy Liu and an intern found by scrolling Instagram, and grew the list toward 500. Retail Dive reported in November 2023 that The Buy Guide, a shopping account started by three women, sold through a 10,000-cup wholesale order of Stanley Quenchers, after which Stanley put more focus on the product. A smaller brand can copy both: hand-pick 20 to 50 creators for fit, and send product to the creators who already use it.
Cost per post is the number that matters. Add product cost (what a unit costs you, not retail), pick and pack, and shipping to get a landed cost per unit, then divide by the post rate. In a worked example with a $25 product and $12 of packing and postage, 50 units cost $1,850. At a 20% post rate each post costs $185, at 30% about $123, and at 40% $92.50. At the low end that is inside the range industry guides give for simply paying a nano creator for a post.
Agreement-first gifting raises the rate. When creators accept a specific deliverable and a posting window before you ship, you send fewer units for the same number of posts. No verified benchmark exists for agreement-first post rates, so the guide labels its 80% scenario as an assumption. No-strings seeding still has a place for unscripted reactions and for creators who will not commit to a deliverable for product alone, as long as you budget for it at a rate you can defend.
You can raise your post rate before anything ships: choose creators for fit rather than follower count, ask before you send, let creators pick the shade or size, keep the ask to one post, write a one-page brief, count the deadline from delivery, and plan exactly two follow-ups. A good seeding kit holds the full-size hero product, a one-card brief, a personal note, how to tag the post, handles and links, the deadline and a contact, and packaging that survives the trip.
A product seeding campaign on Aurelia runs agreement-first from the start. You post a Gifted product or Paid plus product campaign, creators apply with their media kit and answers attached, and Aurelia’s picks rank every applicant by fit with your brief. Each creator accepts and signs an agreement generated from your campaign before anything ships. Addresses are checked with Google address validation, tracking imports from your 3PL or a sheet, Aurelia Manager sends the shipping and deadline reminders, and usage rights are recorded at closeout. The workspace is free; one platform fee per campaign sits on top of your creator budget, with a $99 minimum.
