How to Start an Influencer Affiliate Program (Shopify Brands)
How to start an affiliate program on Shopify: Collabs setup, commission rates in dollars, when to add a flat fee, and examples from Stanley and Sephora.
To start an affiliate program on Shopify, install an affiliate tool, set a commission you can afford in dollars per order, and invite 20 to 30 creators who already like your product. Shopify Collabs is free to install and, as of October 2026, lists a 2.9% processing fee on automatic commission payments. The app takes an afternoon; getting creators to post and sell is the real work. The approach that holds up is a hybrid: pay commission to everyone, and add a flat fee for the creators whose content you need on a date.
Real programs show the pattern. Stanley had stopped restocking its Quencher by 2019, until the commerce blog The Buy Guide placed a wholesale order for 5,000 cups and sold them within days; CNBC reported revenue rising from $73 million in 2019 to $402 million in 2022. Sephora’s My Sephora Storefront pays creators a 15% commission, and Marketing Brew reported 1,000 live storefronts by late October 2025. Digiday reported in June 2026 that Target replaced its commission-based creator program with two tiers, and Portland Leather Goods paid cash bonuses on top of TikTok Shop commission during a seven-day affiliate sprint.
On Shopify, the setup runs in seven steps over about a month: work out what you can pay per order, choose the tool, create one invite program with a commission and a customer discount, write the offer on one page, recruit your first 25 creators by name, send product with a one-page primer, and read the numbers at 30, 60 and 90 days. Collabs is available on all Shopify plans except Starter and Retail, holds commission for 30 days by default and pays creators through your Shopify bill. As of October 10, 2026, Shopify’s help center says Collabs isn’t accepting new creator signups, so plan to bring your own creators.
Influencer commission rates are best set in dollars, not copied from a benchmark. Published reference points as of October 2026: commissions on ShopMy and LTK tend to range from 10% to 30% according to Marketing Brew, Sephora pays 15%, TikTok Shop lets sellers set 1% to 80%, and Amazon Associates’ standard rates run from 1% to 10% by category. On a $60 order with a 15% customer discount and a 15% commission, the creator earns $7.65. A creator would need 20 such orders for one video to pay $153, close to the $154 average paid UGC collaboration on Collabstr’s marketplace.
Affiliate and influencer marketing buy different things. Commission pays for sales and asks the creator to work before knowing what they’ll earn. A flat fee buys agreed content, a deadline and usage rights. A hybrid pays a smaller fee for the content plus commission on sales, and TikTok Shop offers flat fee collaborations of $20 to $10,000 per creator with commission on top. Pay for content instead of commission when the margin leaves only cents per order, when you need videos for ads more than you need the sale, or when you have a launch date.
Aurelia works beside an affiliate program. Affiliate links, codes, commission and payouts stay in your affiliate tool, such as Shopify Collabs or TikTok Shop. Aurelia is the creator campaign marketplace where you find and pay the creators: you post one campaign, creators apply, and Aurelia’s picks rank them by fit with your brief. The agreement is written from your campaign, product ships only to creators who have signed, you comment on drafts at the exact second, and each creator is paid to their bank automatically when you approve their work. The workspace is free, with one platform fee added on top of your creator budget.
